Lt Col Bishop joined CAP as a cadet in 1956, and again as a Senior in 1966.
He has served in different capacities at the squadron, group, and wing levels.
A CAP Command Pilot, Lt Col Bishop has flown as a mission pilot since 1968
with several finds and 16 saves. He has completed National Check Pilot School,
Squadron Leadership School, Corporate Learning Course, Regional Staff College,
and National Staff College. He served in the United States Air Force from 1960
to 1964.
While attending Auburn University and working as a flight instructor in the
military flight program, Tom was hired by Delta Air lines. He flew for Delta
for 31 years, the last 23 years as a Captain, retiring in 1997. Tom has an ATP
and CFII, with approximately 33,000 hours. He has flown the DC-3, DC-6,DC-7
DC-8, DC-9, B-727, B-737, B-757, B-767, DHC-4, CV-440, CV-880, L-1011,
MD-11, and many different light aircraft.
Tom was the United States Intermediate National Aerobatic Champion in 1982,
and holds the world record for the most take-offs and landings in a 24-hour
period, four hundred and forty two, on May 18, 2001.
Tom is an Accelerated Free-Fall Instructor Examiner, with over 3500 free-fall
jumps. He is a licensed Master Peace Officer, Forensic Hypnotist, and Drug
Recognition Expert.
Tom is Vice-President of Texas Turbine Conversions Inc. He also serves as
a Production Test Pilot for the company.
Tom considers his greatest accomplishments are marrying Jean, his wife of forty
years, having his son Sam, an attorney, his daughter Laura, a registered nurse, his
son Bobby, a pilot with American, his son Alex who is sixteen, and his six grandchildren.
